Candida albicans is a fungus (yeast) that normally inhabits the gut in small amounts. Levels of Candida are kept in check by the good or friendly bacteria in the gut. However, if the growth of Candida is not kept under control it can lead to an overgrowth known as candidiasis or Candida Related Complex. If the immune system is compromised, the yeast proliferates and transforms into a harmful infection capable of causing disease that can compromise the immune system even further.

Factors that increase the risk of yeast
  • Prolonged antibiotic use (kills good bacteria, allowing yeast overgrowth)
  • Estrogen replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, and/or steroidal use
  • Alcohol use and a poor eating pattern high in simple sugars (yeast tends to feed on sugar)
  • Other contributing factors include: chronic stress, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, a weakened immune system, environmental toxins, impaired liver function, and food and environmental allergies and/or sensitivities.
Common symptoms of candidiasis
  • Food sensitivities
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Joint pain
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Decreased libido
  • Headaches
  • Alternating diarrhea and constipation
  • Rectal itching
  • Sugar cravings
  • Recurring local Candida infections
  • Alteration in menstrual cycle
  • Oral thrush
  • Brain fog
The Role of Food Sensitivities

As seen above, food sensitivities could increase your risk of Candida overgrowth. Inflammation caused by food sensitivities can weaken the immune system, making it more susceptible to candidiasis. Knowing and avoiding your food triggers are some of the steps you can take to managing this condtion. Learn more about food sensitivities and the Alcat Test by visiting us here.
